Insider Scoop: Touring South Korea
A place where ancient kingdoms meet futuristic scenes, South Korea is a rapidly emerging holiday destination, and for good reason. Whether Jeju’s heritage-drenched volcanic coast or Seoul’s beauty-stricken Hanok Village, this East Asian gem charms all.
To ensure you experience the best of South Korea, our very own Touring Expert, Lena McGarry, spills the tea off the back of her recent trip through this majestic country. Read on for the Lena’s hot tips.
1. What were your three favourite destinations on the tour and why?
“Gyeongju is a great place to learn more about South Korea’s rich history and its kingdoms. The city is home to ancient tombs and beautiful temples, and has a really serene atmosphere to it. All the ruins are surrounded by stunning parks—it would be lovely to see the area in cherry season, however even in May (when I visited), pretty flowers where in bloom.
I loved Seoul and really want to go back to explore it even more. It has a great mix between the old and the super modern. We went to Gyeokbong Palace where watching the changing of the guard performance was a highlight. We also visited the bustling shopping districts of Myeongdong and Dongdaemun, most notable for the seemingly endless Korean beauty and makeup products.
I did the optional day tour in Busan and it was a great pick. We did the scenic coastal train, explored a fish market (with a delicious lunch), and went to Gamcheon Village—a hillside village made up of pastel-coloured houses. All the laneways and streets are decorated with beautiful murals and street art.”
2. What were your favourite views?
“Jeju Island has stunning scenery as you drive around the island. One spot we went to was Daepo Jusangjeolli—made up of dramatic cliff faces formed by former lava flows, and backdropped by beautiful ocean views. It reminded me of Giant’s Causeway in Ireland. I also loved going to the top of Namsan Tower is Seoul. It had an amazing view of the city below.”
3. What was your favourite thing to do on the tour and why?
“Wearing hanbok, which is the traditional Korean dress. You can rent these and wear them around the palace grounds in Seoul. So many people (ladies and men) were dressed in these and, with the palace grounds as the backdrop, it made for some great photos.”
4. What surprised you most about South Korea?
“I was surprised by how uncrowded everywhere felt. Even Seoul, which is quite busy, didn’t feel too overwhelming with people. If I were to compare it to Tokyo, I would say that Seoul is much easier to get around and you don’t have to battle through crowds.
I was also surprised by the richness and depth of Korea’s historical legacy. The vibrant palaces in Seoul, such as Gyeongbokgung, have detailed and colourful architecture, and beautiful gardens. I was surprised by how far back the royal dynasties go and how it really has shaped modern South Korea.”
5. What was your favourite food on the tour?
“In Gyeongju, we had a delicious lunch which had so much food included—the entire table was covered in options. South Korea is well known for its side dishes called “banchan”, which are made up of vegetables, pickles and kimchi. The main dish was a grilled fish, but as a vegetarian, I had vegetable tempura and the whole meal was amazing. South Korean food has such a rich variety of flavours, not just spicy. I also highly recommend trying all the different variety of coffees available (my must-drink flavour is a banana milk latte).”
6. Any tips for someone considering a touring holiday in South Korea?
“Bring comfortable walking shoes and a jacket (even in Spring and Summer) because the weather can change quite quickly. Also, don’t be afraid to take a walk and explore areas around your hotel. In Seoul, we stayed in Insadong and the next street over had the best cafes and bars.”
7. Anything else you would like to add about your experience?
“Our tour guide did an amazing job at looking after the whole group. She shared so much knowledge about Korean history and modern lifestyles. There was even a bit of karaoke on the bus which was fun (others joined in too!).”
