Spending the Day In… Dubrovnik
One of the Mediterranean’s most popular tourist destinations, the Croatian city of Dubrovnik, is an enchanting place awash with stunning architecture, well-preserved historic buildings, and breathtaking natural beauty. While 12 hours in such a breathtaking city may not seem enough, we’ve put together a short guide to help you get the most out of your visit.
In the Morning
Explore the Old Town
Avoid the crowds and head straight to Dubrovnik’s Old Town, an area surrounded by almost two kilometres of stone walls. Enjoy the 3.5-kilometre walk or catch one of the two buses that run back and forth ever 20-15 minutes. Wander along the well-worn streets and marvel at the stunning architecture in this historic hub. Stradun is the 300-metre long main thoroughfare which hosts several public processions and feasts, as well as thousands of tourists who flock to the Old Town each day during peak months.
Walk along the ancient city walls*
Built to defend the city from hostile forces, the Old Town’s walls date back to the 7th century and are now a popular tourist attraction. After paying an entry fee, you can walk along the full length of the walls, taking in amazing views of the nearby Adriatic Sea and the Old Town’s stunning buildings, with their white façades and orange roofs. The admission fee also includes access to Fort Lovrijenac, an 11th-century fortress that offers incredible views.
*Be sure to check the opening times for the city walls to avoid disappointment.
Visit Lokrum Island
Venture out from Dubrovnik by taking a ferry from the Old Town to the nearby island of Lokrum. Approximately 15 minutes away by ferry, this beautiful island is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. While here, you can stroll through the majestic Botanical Gardens, which were planted in the 19th century, and visit the ruins of the medieval Benedictine Monastery. In the summertime, Lokrum Island’s beaches are incredibly inviting, with their crystal clear, sparkling waters.
Lunch Stop
After returning from Lokrum Island, head back to the Old Town in search of a beautiful place to rest, relax and refuel.
In the Afternoon
Explore the Gornji Ugao Tower
Learn about one of Dubrovnik’s more recent archaeological findings: a medieval foundry from the 15th century. Here you can see the remains, including a force, mould-casting section and a sand depository, and learn where gunpowder was prepared along with where various tools and weapons were produced.
Learn about history at War Photo Limited
Continue on your journey of learning at the War Photo Limited, an exhibition centre that features war and conflict photojournalism.
Take the cable car up Mount Srđ*
For unmatched views of Dubrovnik, make your way up Mount Srđ by cable car. At the top, you can snap a few photos of the surrounding scenery and the setting sun.
*Be sure to check the opening times for the cable car during your visit to avoid disappointment.
In the Evening
Enjoy drinks and a relaxing dinner in the Old Town
Cap off a wonderful day in port by heading to one of Old Town’s lively bars and indulging in a refreshing beverage. From there, make your way to any one of the nearby restaurants for some tasty Croatian cuisine.
