Arrive Fukuoka, Kyushu

Welcome to Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost major island, a remote subtropical paradise famous for steaming volcanoes and natural hot springs. The ‘island of fire and healing waters’ is off the typical tourist trail and offers dynamic landscapes, unique culture, world-class cuisine and hospitality distinctive to countryside Japan. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel in Fukuoka, a modern gateway city to Kyushu.

Accommodation: the b hakata or similar

Fukuoka (B, D)

The energetic city of Fukuoka is famed for unique yet delicious food and bustling nightlife. Begin your adventure with a visit to Dazaifu Tenmangu, an impressive shrine set in the historic town of Dazaifu, popular with students praying for good exam results. Next, step back in time to life as it was during the Meiji and Taisho periods at Hakata Machiya Folk Museum. Then, discover the age-old tradition of sake brewing at Hakata Hyakunenkura, the only sake brewery remaining in Hakata. Tonight, savour the local flavours of Fukuoka with a delightful welcome dinner. Hakata is famous for rich, creamy and porky tonkotsu ramen.

Accommodation: the b hakata or similar

Fukuoka – Nagasaki (B)

Set off for the historic port city of Nagasaki, once synonymous with western trade. Begin with a visit to the tiny artificial island of Dejima, a historic Dutch trading post that once was the only district permitting foreign presence. Stroll around the picturesque harbourside restaurants at Dejima Wharf for lunch on your own accord. In the afternoon, pay respects with a visit to Nagasaki Peace Park, established to commemorate the atomic bombing of the city during World War II. The Atomic Bomb Museum is a powerful symbol of world peace and an enduring reminder that nuclear war should never be repeated.

Accommodation: Hotel New Nagasaki or similar

Nagasaki – Unzen – Kumamoto (B)

Enjoy a complete change of scenery at the enthralling town of Unzen, famous for steaming volcanic landscapes and a world enveloped by hot spring gas fumes. The atmospheric sight and smell of mega-hot steam and acidic sulphur billowing from the fumaroles gives rise to the name Unzen Hell (Unzen Jigoku). Proceed to Unzen Toy Museum, a nostalgic triple-story house packed with the cutest antique Japanese toys. Conclude a fascinating day travelling to the stunning castle city of Kumamoto.

Accommodation: Kumamoto Tokyu REI Hotel or similar

Kumamoto – Mt Aso – Beppu, Oita (B)

No visit to Kumamoto is complete without a visit to Kumamoto Castle, considered one of Japan’s most impressive structures. The castle finally reopened after 2016 earthquakes ravaged parts of the castle, requiring 20 years to fully repair. Nearby, the photogenic lakeside garden of Suizenji Park is a beautiful depiction of a classical Japanese garden. Stroll around the park to find one of the finest miniature garden representations of Mt Fuji. Then, take a break from lively urbane neighbourhoods of Kumamoto and travel towards captivating Mt Aso, the largest active volcano in Japan and among the largest in the world. From the vantage point at Kusasenri Plateau, take in spectacular grassland scenery, caldera cones and crater ponds. In the late afternoon, transfer to the famous hot spring (onsen) resort city of Beppu in Oita prefecture.

The first stop is Fushimi Inari Shrine, famous for the seemingly unending path of bright orange torii gates that wind through the hills, making it one of the most recognisable icons of Japan.
